The entire medical student process is actually a complex process for non-medical people. From the different medical degrees, to internship and residency and even specialist training, there’s a different term and system for each.

Actually, even for specialist training—this medical training level varies in specialty focus and specialist medical colleges. In some colleges, a specialist trainee may continue as a Registered Medical Officer while in training, while others begin as registrars already.

Registrar Rotations

Medical Registrar’s Key Responsibility

According to the Health Department of the Queensland Government, a medical registrar’s responsibilities include:

  • Patient assessment and management upon consultation of the patient
    • Formulating plans for management
    • Implementing medical decisions of the senior medical staff on the patient
    • Performing corresponding procedures within capability
    • Coordinating with other specialty departments
    • Coordinates with other health professionals on the continuous clinical care of patients
    • Maintains patient clinical records
  • Supervision and support for junior medical staff (including feedback on performance)
  • Development of professional knowledge through educational program and training courses involvement
  • Participation in research activities

Requirements for a Medical Registrar

The Queensland government also noted that in the state, the following are the requirements for the position:

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification registrable with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Medical Practitioner in Queensland

Qualifications to Become a Registrar

Being a registrar is not easy, a lot of skill and characteristics are needed in order to perfectly fit for this medical training level and profession. The Queensland Government noted that registrars should embody the following traits:

  • Demonstrates clinical skills and attributes fitting of a registrar
    • Willingness to undertake rotation placements in different areas on different time shifts
    • Demonstrates personal characteristics, such as empathy, enthusiasm, initiative and commitment
  • Ability to work in a complex environment
    • Able to make complex clinical decisions
    • Able to make sound clinical judgement
    • Able to work with clinical knowledge and skill appropriate to the practice
  • Demonstrates leadership, teamwork and conflict management
    • Able to implement effective self-management practices
    • Able to effectively manage other people
    • Able to use logical thinking in solving medical problems and making decisions
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates commitment to learning in a medical environment
    • Participates in professional and educational development
    • Commitment to develop educator skills
  • Demonstrates professional and ethical behaviours
    • Has respect for others
    • Demonstrates commitment to personal and professional ethical practice
